Welcome to the Nottingham Woodborough Branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust.
We are a small group of volunteers who find homes for Greyhounds when they finish racing. Not everyone knows this, but Greyhounds make wonderful pets...Many people only know Greyhounds as track racersthey look as though they must need lots of exercise, and apparently they are so fierce that they have to wear muzzles to stop them fighting! In fact, they are lazy and gentle.. The muzzles are just worn because of the intensity of close racing, and its only since the 1920s that track racing has been going at allfor the other 99% of the 8,000 years the breed has been in existence they have been a working hunting dog just like Spaniels, Retrievers and Labradors. So like all other pet dogs, Greyhounds have been bred to be affectionate and obedient, dependent on and faithful to us. Everyone thinks that because they are so athletic they must need lots of exercise, but because they are sprinters, they actually need a lot less exercise than dogs who were bred to work all day, like Collies and German Shepherds. Typically, a Greyhound is happy with two doggy walks a day, then the rest of the time they just like to laze around!
